Celebrity: How to Cope When Everybody Wants You

Celebrity: How to Cope When Everybody Wants You.....Managing fame and celebrity is a tricky business. People who work with and around celebrities have seen the symptoms of fame and lack of boundaries too often. You are with the same people every day. Your home is a tour bus, hotels, airplanes or a limo. You are away from for family and friends for long periods on location or on tour. You get demands from everyone for your time and attention. You start to feel you are not in control of the decisions about your life, and feel you are losing control.

You answer the same inane interview questions six times a day. You don't get much sleep because of the shooting or touring schedule. You don't eat right or exercise regular because you are on the road or on location. The list is endless, and you feel the 24-7 pressure and stress. Some people start dealing with celebrity by overdoing the drugs, alcohol, sex, and partying. Ignoring the situation or covering it up through inappropriate behaviors just makes it worse.

One of the best ways to keep the boundaries between your public and private life is to keep the two strictly separate. In addition, be as dull as dirt. Get famous and stay famous because your work is good, not because your life is a public rollercoaster and train wreck rolled into one. Managing fame is about finding ways to balance self-expression with your privacy, even though these may seem to be mutually exclusive. Don't give people a reason to talk about you except in terms of your work.

Refuse to answer questions about your personal life, even when things are going well. If you are consistently and ruthlessly silent about your private life, no one will be surprised when you say I want to keep my private life private. Refuse to discuss your love life, your kids, your parents, your inner struggles, anything of the sort. Always be willing to talk about your work and your projects, your special causes or charities. Set good boundaries and use them consistently and strictly.

Remember your humility when you are dealing with celebrity pressures. You got famous because people admired you and your work. Be real with people because you are just as human and imperfect as they are. Talk about normal stuff like how you look without make up, or what it is like to be sick on set. People need to remember the image of your perfection is just an image and not the reality of the real you.

Leverage your celebrity to help others, by drawing attention to special causes. Donate to charity in a very public way, start your own cause, or "adopt" a cause or charity close to your heart. Spread the word about your cause in casual small talk and in interviews. When people ask personal questions about your private life, having a cause to talk about will give you something to refocus the discussion. Dealing with celebrity means knowing your stance on important real-life issues, and knowing your morals and values. Be ready for the "surprise" interview, and keep your message pure. Do the right thing and follow your heart.

Find and use healthy stress outlets and stress management techniques. Make time to recharge and recoup. Take the time to rest, eat, exercise, practice your spirituality, and spend time with family and friends. Keep your private life simple and uncomplicated. These things will help you feel less out of control and more grounded. Use your emotional intelligence, and avoid the traps of celebrity like reckless behavior, addiction, and pride. Living a quiet life and keeping celebrity in perspective can alleviate some of its impact on your quality of life.

Keep a support system around you. Choose your support team wisely, including only those who have your best interests in mind. A strong support group of friends and family who don't give a damn about your fame will help you stay humble, sane and grounded. Include your legal team, public representative and coaches or mentors in this support group. These people are professionals at dealing with celebrity, so let them help you. Try not to make enemies, and manage your personal brand effectively.

Use your representatives and coaches for managing fame and building your personal brand. Guard your reputation and brand with the utmost care. Once you lose your good reputation, it is very difficult to regain it. Have your publicist or representatives carefully control your interviews and appearances, and monitor your presence in the media. Focus on your long-term business goals rather than your current short-term fame. Make decisions with the help of your support team that are best for your business, your brand, and your personal life for the long term.

Do what you can to learn from others mistakes. We can all think of dozens of friends in the business that let fame get the upper hand. They lost their selves, their values, their morals and their privacy to popularity and the addictive drug of fame. A professional celebrity coach can help you with managing fame by giving good advice and keeping you on the right track.

Remember that you are an individual, regardless of the size of your bank account or the number of fans you have. Every person dealing with celebrity and with being in the public eye approaches it differently. You need to acknowledge the reality of your situation, and balance that with the anxiety and stress caused by celebrity exposure. Survival as a celebrity depends on understanding and setting good boundaries and sticking with then, and in knowing how to act in public to maintain your image.
