If you can answer the question, how do you become famous but still maintain some normality in your life? You could make a lot of money by sharing your secret. Contrary to popular belief, not every famous person courts publicity, and many would prefer not to have it.
In this age of twenty four hour news and celebrity magazines the media has an insatiable appetite for the comings and goings of even the least famous in our society. You may remember the furor that ensued when the Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton announced he was moving to Switzerland. He gave his reason for leaving the U.K. that he could not even go into a petrol station to fill his car without being mobbed. I guess this does not happen in Switzerland!
There is no question that a lot of celebrities, rather than famous people, do seek publicity and by so doing they forfeit any right to privacy. There is a well known idiom "if you sup with the devil, you need a long spoon". So it is with the media and paparazzi. If you encourage them, then you cannot complain when they invade your privacy.
So how does fame differ from celebrity? Well some people are famous, some are celebrities, and then you have famous celebrities. Fame can be achieved in any sphere of life, medicine, politics, sport all have their share of famous people. Alexander Fleming, Winston Churchill, Steve Redgrave, all are famous in their own field, but only one could be remotely termed a celebrity.
The point is if you are famous when you are alive the chances are you will still be famous when you are dead. Equally, you may become famous after you have died and you will remain famous thereafter.
Celebrity is a totally different matter. For celebrity read popular. Basically that is what a celebrity is, someone who is popular. As everybody knows popularity can be very short lived. People who win reality television shows are popular (people voted for them), and in turn they become celebrities. The length of time they remain a celebrity will then depend on their publicist and whoever else they pay to promote them.
Lastly we have famous celebrities. In the examples given earlier only Steve Redgrave could remotely be classed as a "famous celebrity" he has achieved his fame in rowing in the Olympics, and there is no question he is perceived as a celebrity. So you see if you want to know how do you become famous and still have a normal life, discover a cure for cancer rather than winning Big Brother.
