Christmas is a magical time of year and this holiday season I want to explore some of the wonderful holiday traditions that are celebrated in Chicago, Illinois. This article will be the first of a series of article about Christmas traditions celebrated around the World.

Chicago Christmas Celebrations begin in Mid November with the decorating of the City. The whole City of Chicago seems to be transformed into a magical wonderland. There are many events and activities that celebrate the holidays. Beginning with the Magnificent mile of lights Festival, to Macy's Great Tree lighting and holiday window displays, ice skating in Millenium Park, Christmas around the World and Holidays of Light at The Museum of Science and Industry. The Festivities begin the weekend before Thanksgiving with the hanging of a million lights in trees along Chicago's Michigan Avenue known as the Magnificent Mile of Lights Festival. This tradition is one of the biggest and most popular of Chicago's holiday events. The celebration includes three separate weekends of music, parades, fireworks and more. Opening weekend is the first weekend in December and the weekend before Christmas. This event draws big crowds.


The Great Tree lighting and holiday window displays at Macy's State Street will make you feel as if you have stepped into a Christmas Fairytale. At 12:00 noon on the 7th floor in the Walnut Room the Great Tree Lighting ceremony begins. Following the Tree Lighting you will find family fun, face painting, and balloon twisting, and much more.

Enjoy an evening of ice skating at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park. The ice rink opens mid-November and remains open throughout the holiday season. The ice rink located on Michigan Avenue between Madison and Washington Streets.

After ice skating, warm up with a cup of hot cocoa and catch a horse and carriage ride tour through the streets of the city to view the splendor of the season with the stunning Christmas decorations and the soft glow of millions of lights to warm your soul.

Christkindle Market is a German themed market with many charming Christmas decorations beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Christkindle Market is a German inspired winter wonderland with Christmas themed events and dances, and a multitude of stores with lavish Christmas decorations.

Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light at the Museum of Science & Industry will astound you, with its plethora of decorated trees. More than 50 trees decorated to represent the global cultures, these trees take center stage in the Rotunda.

As you can see the City of Chicago has a wonderful array of holiday events and celebrations to choose from. If you have a couple of days to spend why not visit them all, you will walk away inspired by the decorations and wrapped with a warm glow of the memories around your heart.
